Hello. I'm Vijay.
Born in London in 1976 into an Indian family, now at home in Sydney. Technology for work, sport for life, and still working out what a successful life actually looks like.
Where I come from
Growing up in London in an Indian family gives you two ways of seeing things, and you tend to keep both.
Hard work, family and respect were not abstract ideas at home. They were simply how things were done. Australia added something else: optimism, openness and a lot of sport.
Family
Married for more than 25 years, with two children who are now young adults. Family has taught me more about patience, perspective and what really matters than any job has. It's also the main reason success looks different now than it did at 25.
Work and technology
A career that has never been a straight line.
Work began before smartphones, Google or Zoom. Since then: software, cloud, SaaS, fintech, accounting technology, sports technology and now AI, mostly building and leading teams across Australia and Asia Pacific.
Some roles went well. Others taught more by not going well. Titles matter less over a lifetime than what you learn, who you work with and how you treat them. The chapters.
Sport
A Liverpool supporter for as long as I can remember, and a community-sport volunteer and administrator. Sport taught me most of what I know about preparation, teams and bouncing back.
Ambition and curiosity
I'm still ambitious. I just ask more often what it's for.
I don't think ambition, money or achievement are bad things. I'm more interested in the point where achievement stops improving your life and starts running it.
Business, investing, AI, health, human behaviour, philosophy, new industries. Curiosity has always been there, and so has the pull towards understanding how things work and why people do what they do. What I'm thinking about.
What matters now
Family, health, good people, and being useful to someone else.
More and more, the satisfaction comes from watching other people do well. Hence the time spent mentoring, and why I'm bringing my experience to boards.
